The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris’ historic centre is the most visited attraction in France, yes, that’s right… not the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre. Whether this is because of its feature in Victor Hugo’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame’ or the impressive towers, beautiful windows and impressive stance, we don’t know.

So it all sounds pretty impressive, right? Something that you’ve just got to see.. well there is a slight problem, parking. The Notre Dame Cathedral

One of the oldest Gothic monuments in all of France 

Don’t miss the most famous religious landmark in the whole of Paris. It’s actually on an island in the middle of the Seine -  the Ile de la Cité, placing it in the 4th arrondissement. 

Quick history lesson: Built in 1345, after two years of work. It’s been the place for many royal weddings (remember old Mary Queen of Scots? Well, she got married here), as well as Napoleon’s coronation. The cathedral was then badly damaged in the French Revolution, but restoration work in the 19th century has guaranteed it UNESCO World Heritage status. 

Entrance is free, so it’s easy on the wallet too! And it’s absolutely fantastic! The round windows give gold, purple and red tones, which really do give this place a mystical ambiance. In total it’s 130 metres long and 35 metres high, and my goodness, it packs a punch! Inside, there’s a 700 year old organ, 3 large rosettes (each with a diameter of up to 12 metres), then there’s a host of smaller exhibitions. 

For an entrance fee, you can scale the two 69 metre high towers, and trust us, it’s good value. Once you’ve climbed every one of the 422 steps, you’ll have a breath taking view of Paris! Plus, you can see the church’s two famous gargoyles. But you’re not really into heights? Fair enough, well then we recommend the exact opposite! Going down into the crypt! It’s located underneath the Cathedral’s forecourt. Here you can see a whole host of archaeological finds, to really help you understand what Paris was like way back when.

Think there’s only the Cathedral to see? Wrong! There’s so much to see and do in the surroundings. You can reach the neighbouring Ile Saint-Louis via the Saint-Louis bridge. As well as checking out the Quai de Montebello and the Quai de la Tournelle. Then what about a coffee and a croissant in one of the charming Parisian cafés?
